Flavored Ice Cubes

A scorching Arizona summer screams for ice-cold beverages.

My favorite beverage happens to be water. I enjoy aqua natural (still water) and aqua frizzante (sparkling water). I’m fortunate to have a whole-house water filter to satisfy my seemingly endless thirst.

You might think my beverage of choice is rather boring, but my ice cubes, I assure you are not. Not only do these cubes bring “pretty” to the party, but they also each come with a personality of their own.

Besides the strawberry, kiwi and peach cubes shown here, I also freeze lemon juice and coconut water into cubes.

Flavored fruit cubes can be added to just about any of your favorite beverages. I usually plop a couple of the kiwi and strawberry cubes into a glass of sparkling Pellegrino.

The lemon cubes are a natural for iced tea and lemonade, (keeps the drinks cold without diluting the flavor) and the strawberry hearts say “I love you” when added to a glass of champagne (or orange juice).

Feel free to substitute your favorite fruit, but I’d use the same ratio of fruit, sugar, lemon juice and water.

You may also enjoy chocolate espresso ice cubes, sweet cappuccini cubes and creamy milk cubes to go with your “ice” coffee.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups strawberries, kiwi or peaches (stemmed, peeled and/or pitted)
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  1. In a blender, add the rinsed strawberries, (stems removed) water, sugar and lemon juice. Puree until smooth.
  2. Pour into ice cube trays (I bought the heart-shape trays on Amazon. I love them because they can also be used for baking and as molds for making chocolates).
  3. Freeze until firm (about 4 hours).
