What it Means to Love God

What does it mean to love God?

There are people in our lives, who are at the edge of our worlds. They are called acquaintances. If we see them at the mall, we wave at them. If we do them a favor, we feel that they owe us. If we talk to them for a while making “small talk “and it drags on, we make some excuse as to why we must go.

There are other people whom we call friends. If we see them at the mall, we go over to them. If we do them a favor, the joy was in doing the favor. And if we are speaking with them, we sometimes lose track of time because it is such a good thing to be with them.

Then there are people we love. When we wake up in the morning, we are thinking of them. When we go to bed, we are still thinking of them. Everything we see, in fact, reminds us of the beloved.

For some people, God is only an acquaintance. He is at the edge of their lives. For some people, God is a friend. He is a part of their everyday lives, someone with whom they wish to share their lives. For some people, God is their first and most profound love. He is at the center of who they are and all that they do.
