Indulgences for the Holy Souls in Purgatory

In order to understand how you can help the “Poor Souls” in Purgatory by offering up your Plenary and Partial Indulgences, you may need to review All Soul’s Day, Prayers for the Souls in Purgatory, Indulgences

According to St. Augustine, one of the greatest Doctors of the Church, “There is more grace available to humanity than humanity has the ability with which to respond. ”

Because of our fallen nature, there will always be an excess of God’s love to which we fail to respond. Our Blessed Mother restated this to St. Catherine Laboure in the apparition of the Miraculous Medal. Our Lady said she had many more graces to offer humanity than humanity was ready to receive. To which St. Catherine said, “Then give me all those graces!” Smart woman!

“Offering up” all of our satisfactory Indulgences for the Holy Souls in Purgatory and asking our Blessed Mother to dispose of them as she chooses is an act of charity. The following prayer pledge facilitates that.

Act of continuing spiritual resolution.

In Jesus’ name, I hereby make a continuous resolution of my general intention to obtain all available indulgences. I place the fruits of my satisfactory indulgenced works under the loving direction of the Blessed Virgin Mary, primarily for the benefit of the Holy Soul in Purgatory, to be applied as she alone determines, according to the will of God Almighty. Amen

However, if a friend or loved one should die and you desire to offer the happy repose of his or her soul a plenary or partial indulgence, it would be necessary to direct that particular holy act for that particular soul on that particular day. It would not however, be necessary to renew the general intention of your continuing spiritual resolution afterwards, as that would already be in place.

To receive indulgences, it is necessary to have at least a general intention of obtaining them. Having prayerfully made the above act, you will automatically accrue graces for the Holly Souls.
